Location

It's in the commercial heart of Liverpool, but on the fringes of the main shopping streets and with restaurants and bars nearby. James Street is the nearest station.

Bedrooms

The bedrooms here are really special, with super king platform beds, the kind you sink into, tactile furnishings and lots of low-key chic style. They’re very generously sized - you could hold an aerobics class in some of them - and each offers a proper chance to relax in oversized armchairs, with space left over to work and eat in. Although you’re unlikely to hear noise from fellow guests, note that it’s a listed building with single-glazed windows, so there may be some street noise. 209 is the quietest room, but also the darkest. Free internet access is wired in the rooms and WiFi in the adjoining restaurant.

Public areas

There’s enviable period detail in all the public spaces. An impressive staircase curves through the building and reception has seating, newspapers and a beautiful marble fireplace. On the first floor, there’s a large, quiet lounge.

Eating and drinking

Merchants bar and restaurant is linked to the hotel but takes on a lively life of its own at evenings and weekends. It’s another listed space where old features have been given a glamorous re-gilding. Breakfast is served here, and can also be brought to the room.

Service

This is a small hotel - just 20 bedrooms - and staff pride themselves on knowing their regulars and welcoming potential new ones in a relaxed, professional style.

Who stays there

Couples of any age, and businesspeople. It’s not suitable for toddlers because lots of the rooms are split-level.
