On the harbourfront overlooking the bay in Vela Luka, just a couple of minutes from the ferry quay, on the west coast of the island of Korcula, served by daily ferry and catamaran from Split.
The bedrooms are my favourite feature here and I adore the bathrooms. There are three unit types - Adria (standard double), Mare (deluxe double) and Isola (junior suite). All have wooden floors, modern minimalist furnishing, daring glass-walled bathrooms with shower, plus air conditioning, safe, mini-bar, satellite-TV and internet access.
All the public spaces are light, airy and colourful. The restaurant has a lovely open-air terrace through summer.
Eating and drinking
The restaurant serves a generous buffet breakfast, followed by Dalmatian specialities and a fine selection of local wines at lunch and dinner. The hotel offers vegetarian dishes on request. There is occasional live music at dinner in peak season.
There’s an outdoor pool plus a fifth floor wellness centre offering massage, sauna and a gym. For beaches and bathing, I suggest taking a taxi-boat to the tiny nearby island of Proizd (nudist friendly).
Excellent service, both at reception and in the restaurant.
Who stays there
Opened in 2010, Hotel Korkyra still needs to find its niche market. With beautifully designed rooms in low-key Vela Luka, I’d recommend it for couples who want style and comfort without the crowds.
