On a busy street in Beyoğlu, just steps away from one of the city’s biggest transit hubs and the start of one of its liveliest nightlife and shopping districts, the Germir Palas is also extremely convenient for airport transfers as the main airport shuttle service drops off and picks up right across the street.
Comfortable, if a bit old-fashioned, with dark wood, Victorian-style floral wallpaper, and paintings hanging over the beds, the hotel’s 49 deluxe guest rooms are essentially identical. Almost half are reserved for non-smokers on non-smoking floors. Rooms in the back (facing Lamartin Caddesi) are quieter, while upper-story rooms facing Cumhuriyet Caddesi have views over Taksim Gezi Park and (from the top floor) the Bosphorus.
Breakfast is served on a casual open-air rooftop terrace with a Bosphorus view. There’s also a small lobby with plush leather couches and chairs, a meeting room for conferences and banquets, and a business centre. Broadband Wi-Fi is available in all rooms and common areas.
Eating and drinking
The ground-floor restaurant/bar serves a mixed menu of Turkish food, pizzas, salads, pastas, and other hearty fare and also offers sidewalk seating along the cobbled, pedestrianised street at the back of the building.
A tiny, windowless fitness centre is available for those who must get in some weightlifting, stretching, or a treadmill run while travelling. I found it extremely uninspiring, though, and recommend taking a few laps through the park across the street instead.
Service is friendly and informal. Concierge service is available 24 hours a day.
Who stays there
Mostly solo travellers, couples, and families, rather than groups. The hotel staff told me they get a lot of American, Canadian, and British visitors, as well as Turks.
