The original Club Tropicana and an iconic Ibiza experience.

Freddie Mercury. Grace Jones. Julio Iglesias. Kylie Minogue. Wham. Pikes shot to fame in the 1980s for its famous roll call of hard partying guests and remains true to its heritage, though it's much more discreet these days. I’ll never tell what I saw (or did), but I can assure you it’s an essential Ibiza experience.

Location

Despite its immediate proximity to the infamous town of San Antonio, Pikes is worlds away, sitting pretty halfway up a hill in the area’s country outskirts. Don’t make my mistake of walking into town – a taxi or hire car is totally necessary to get anywhere.

Bedrooms

Rustic in parts and completely revamped in others, each and every room is different. My budget only extended to a junior suite but as an Ibiza virgin at the time, I adored its Spanish charm, from mosaic tiles, terracotta floors and typical blue and yellow curtains. When I think back, it was my favourite ever Ibiza hotel – they do say you never forget your first. If you prefer modernity, the hotel had a major renovation about three years ago, and numerous suites now incorporate edgy, ultra modern décor with the traditional architecture.

Public areas

Pikes feels like a sprawling, Spanish farmhouse and there are plenty of places to hang out, from the courtyard restaurant and bar to the swim-up pool bar (my favourite!) plus lots of little intimate nooks with daybeds and couches to relax on.

Eating and drinking

The on-site restaurant is called Plaza Mayor and is open to the public. It serves good, hearty Mediterranean cuisine and also sends out poolside snacks. While I have to admit I slept through breakfast most days (it finishes at noon – and I was on holiday!), I love the romantic setting it becomes by night.

Leisure facilities

There’s a tennis court and gym on-site, but for me, it’s all about that famous pool and the swim-up cocktail bar. You’ll recognise it from Wham’s Club Tropicana film clip – need I say more?

Service

The bar staff and waiters are friendly, but it definitely takes some time to achieve anything – room service in particular – so be prepared to wait. Get chatting to owner Tony Pike however and all of a sudden, your wish is their command.

Who stays there

Celebrities, footballers and more mature, ex-raver Brits. Popular with honeymooners too.

Price advice

It’s pretty rare to see special deals here, but in May and October prices are lower… and it’s still perfect pool weather.
