4 star hotel

4.7

Gloriously gothic boutique Glasgow hotel suited for racy couples and late night vamps.

Ooh la la, this place makes me all hot and flustered. A fusion of a modern independent townhouse with a classic Jekyll and Hyde twist, Saint Judes is a luxurious five-star refuge with a nod to the dark side. Beneath its domed skylight, I love the black velour carpets, atmospheric candles, plastic candelabras and a wrought iron staircase straight out of a Mary Shelley novel. Up-and-coming local designers Paper Igloo really have worked their magic. Outside, creeping vines conceal the face of the building and add to its mystique. If that’s not temptation enough, the rooms used to stock the Karma Sutra rather than The Bible.

Location

Snuggly nestled on the sunny side of Bath Street in the city centre, the city’s best shops, cafés and restaurants are within walking distance. Regular bus services to the West End and the airport run right outside the front door.

Bedrooms

With an erotic Burlesque vibe – suggestive prints of Harlequin-masked models hang above the kingsize beds – and jars of sweeties beside the towelling dressing gowns and shag-rugs, its playful charm is confronting yet well behaved. The walls are papered by provocative local Glasgow interior starlets Timorous Beasties and the five rooms are fitted with funky paper lampshades and iPod docking stations and speakers. I applaud the in-room cocktail making kits! Upstairs, complete with black futons, beaded curtains and a gigantic metal bath tub, the penthouse suite is a gorgeous treasure-trove filled attic.

Public areas

None – but this is more than made up for by the downstairs gastro-pub. The chandeliers and black-pearl necklaces in reception are cool though.

Eating and drinking

Formerly Mama Sans, a manga-inspired cocktail and sushi bar, The Saint on Bath Street is now the city’s newest experimental gastro-pub. Located below street level, with a small basement sun terrace, The Saint specialises in modern contemporary Scottish food and cocktails. The chocolate truffle martini comes recommended. Yum!

Leisure facilities

None. A mixologist cocktail supremo is on hand to offer classes to groups and parties though.

Service

Bespoke and discreet.

Who stays there

Perfect for young, trendy couples seeking late night romance. It’s also specialises in bachelorette parties.
