Just off the The Royal Mile, which is the historical heart of Edinburgh's New Town, thus called because Edinburgh Castle is at one end and the Queen's residence, Holyrood Palace, at the other. In addition there is Holyrood Park, Arthurs Seat – an extinct volcano, and the Scottish Parliament plus great restaurants and bars on your doorstep. Oh, and Dynamic Earth and Camera Obscura for the kids. As you look out of your apartment window it is all laid out before you. A unique location for this reason and one that makes walking everywhere a literal dawdle.

Modern, clean, comfortable with bright bedspreads but neutral surroundings. Nothing unexpected here, but ideal for dropping your stuff and relaxing in. Soap and fluffy towels are supplied, and you get DVD and LCD TV. WiFi is chargeable in the room but free in reception.

Eating and drinking

Basics are provided including a continental breakfast hamper on the first day, tea, coffee and all the annoying things you don't carry but need – dishwasher tablets and the like. Plus a fully fitted kitchen with integrated everything. There are dining areas in the kitchens but you are a moment's walk from dozens of eating options. Whether a Starbucks or something more quirky, they are on your doorstep.

Staff are knowledgeable and friendly so are a good sounding board for any questions you might have about where you are, where you would like to go etc.

As this is an Aparthotel, service is more about the facilities they provide for your use. Freeview TV, washer/dryer in the room and that breakfast hamper is a God-send and something you can pop in your bag to keep you going when you are out and about.

Who stays there

Families, groups of friends, people who want a degree of flexibility and to do their own thing, in their own time. Those on a budget this is seriously good value.
