One block back from Gruž harbour, just a three-minute walk to the ferry quay and bus station, and a pleasant 30-minute walk to Dubrovnik Old Town (served by regular bus, journey time 10 minutes).
While all the rooms have wooden floors, slick minimalist furnishing, air conditioning, safe, flat screen satellite-TV and balcony, the studios and spacious apartments also come with fully-equipped kitchenettes. Studios sleep three persons and apartments four, making them perfect for families. My favourite units are on the upper floors, affording views over Gruž harbour.
Breakfast is served in the ground floor dining room. Free WiFi and laptop are available at reception, and there’s also free underground parking for hotel guests.
Eating and drinking
The plentiful cooked-to-order breakfast makes a fine start to the day. There are plans to offer light snacks too when the outdoor pool bar opens in summer 2011.
The hotel motorboat (two cabins and kitchenette) and skipper are available for private excursions. Big game fishing can also be arranged. A stay-and-sail programme combines staying at the hotel with several nights aboard the boat. A new outdoor pool will open in May 2011.
The hotel is family-run so you can expect a warm homely atmosphere. Staff are helpful and efficient.

Most guests are English-language speakers – Brits, Australians and Americans. With its range of accommodation types (rooms, studios and suites) and self-catering option, plus the outdoor pool, Berkeley is suited to both couples and families with kids.
