Cardiff’s Park Plaza puts you right in the midst of the city centre action; the New Theatre is practically next door, a whole range of bars and nightclubs is opposite and the pedestrianised sprawl of shopping delights is just around the corner. It must be said, I'm not a fan of Greyfriars Road, before The Plaza and various bars arrived it was almost one long bus stop and multi-storey carpark – but I think you’ll be more than satisfied when you step inside.
There’s an immediate warmth to each of the 129 rooms thanks to the hotel’s wise choice of deep brown and walnut colour schemes. Whether you choose regular or suite, the Egyptian cotton bedding and sumptuous pillows are an instant hit and will certainly bode you well after you’ve taken on the city’s attractions. Fluff them up, get cosy, switch on the flat screen TV and you’ll feel the weight lift off in seconds. For even more indulgence, room service is just a call away.
This is where the Park Plaza really excels... The entire building avoids the sterile trappings other chain hotels can suffer from. The health spa, swimming pool, gym, bar and restaurant all operate under the hotel’s Laguna brand and have proved an instant hit with locals as well residents. The stunning lounge area is also ideal for a morning relaxing with the papers or meeting friends.
Eating and drinking
I found the Laguna restaurant and bar really impressive. The menus are updated daily and feature some great twists on traditional dishes such as my personal favourite, roast chicken breast with herb mascarpone. Three courses will set you back a mere £18.50 and the bar is armed with an array of reliable wines, lesser known spirits and a first class cocktail list. 80 per cent of the customers are local, creating a buzzy vibe from late afternoon onwards. Head to the leafy terrace in the summer and you’ll see why Cardiffians' enjoy it!
As with the bar and restaurant, the Laguna health facilities are top notch. The 20m pool is well lit with natural daylight and seems much bigger than it actually is. The gym is fully equipped and offers a range of classes and there’s a wide range of massage and beauty treatments.
The staff were formal but friendly.
