Location

Excellent: close enough to the action but far enough away to offer a relaxing stay, Tosca is five minutes' walk from the bustling Piazzetta and all its bars and nearby restaurants. Once you get off the ferry, bear right and pick up a ticket for the funicular (a few yards away) that takes you up to the Piazzetta; pick up a map from the tourist office (on the corner of the Piazzetta) and take a five minute walk down via V. Emanuele to via D. Birago. The hotel is five minutes from the Giardini di Augusto and the via Krupp.

Bedrooms

Ten clean, bright, and simply furnished rooms are air conditioned and have WiFi, and most also have the benefit of a lovely terrace (with a table and chairs, a couple of sunloungers and a little washing line) overlooking Capri. The interior bathrooms have a powerful shower and/or bath, a decent hairdryer and towels are the thin (non-fluffy) serviette types. Soap and sachet shampoos are provided. There is no mirror light but sunlight from your room streams into the bathroom.

Public areas

The outdoor terrace, with a panoramic view of Capri, is a lovely spot to have breakfast served, and a great place to sit, chill, read a book or enjoy a drink before heading off for dinner.

Eating and drinking

Continental: croissants, jam, juice and coffee.

Service

Ettore really couldn't be more helpful, with everything from restaurant recommendations to travel arrangements.

Who stays there

Tosca is gaining a well-deserved reputation for being one of the best bargain places to stay on Capri. On my visit, fellow breakfasters included a young American couple, a gay Japanese man, and two middle-aged couples (Spanish and Argentinean) who were holidaying together .

Price advice

It's worth noting that the hotel has a minimum and maximum rate in every season, which means that rates can change but the lower rate can be found for last minute bookings and during the months of March and October (April isn't too bad either).
