Steenberg Hotel is below the Constantiaberg mountain range and on the outskirts of the leafy suburb of Tokai. I think it is ideal if you're after a Winelands experience but don't have the time or the inclination to head out Stellenbosch way - it's really conveniently situated and, if you're sporty, the golf course is ideal.
Despite the estate's size, this is a small hotel with only 21 suites. They are decorated with plush fabrics and dotted with antiques. Most have patios, but if money were no object I'd certainly head for one of the carefully conceived Heritage Suites - there are three and each reflects an element of Cape history. I love the Dutch East India Company suite with its Delft porcelain and European antique references.
From walks through the vineyards and lounging at the intimate pool area, to quiet time in the antiques-studded library, guests are assured of plenty of opportunities for downtime.
Eating and drinking
Catharina's is the main hotel restaurant and, with its recent refurbishment and beautiful contemporary interior, is a gorgeous lunch or dinner venue. Chef Garth Almazan serves up a menu with many an authentic Cape twist and he pays particular attention to vegetarian delights too. 1682 is the estate's newest culinary venture - a cellar door eatery that serves robust bistro eats and tapas in sleek and sexy designer surrounds. Both have superb views.
There is an adjacent golf course and a spa.
Personalised service is a well-known characteristic of the Steenberg experience and it's clear that your comfort is of utmost importance to staff.
Who stays there
A popular bet with business travellers (small scale conferences can be held in the original cellar), this is also a popular hotel for mature travellers. That said, honeymooners love the privacy and the fact they can pop into the city within 25 minutes.
The hotel offers a variety of all-inclusive packages.

Pros & Cons
- Gorgeous views and wide open expanses
- I found the spa lacking in finesse - the interior was dated and the room icy on a cold day.
