This nostalgia-laced guest house epitomises simple seaside style.

Whenever a visitor to Cape Town asks me where's a must-visit I always recommend Kalk Bay. I called this quaint fishing village, with its cobbled streets and wonky cottages, home until a few years ago and its unique charm is intoxicating. It's only 20 minutes from the city so you can get to the sights you need to tick off on a visit but the pace here ensures every day feels like a holiday. Chartfield House is exactly where I'd check into if I was looking to chill - its new owners have injected so much love and care into the space, furnishing it with simple antiques and one or two retro items and lovely white and bright linens. It has a barefoot, holiday house feel to it and with those views, it's criminal not to kick back and soak it all in.

Location

In the heart of Kalk Bay, a fishing village 20 minutes south of the city. The house itself was built at the turn of the last century.

Bedrooms

Rooms are airy and bright, with simple unfussy interiors and an old-fashioned summer holiday house appeal. The sea and harbour views are (mostly) equally lovely. The scrubbed wooden floors underfoot and white curtains complete the laid-back appeal.

Public areas

There are plenty of pockets for repose inside while the large garden and terrace are perfect for relaxing and reading a book in. There is a boardroom for small, intimate conferencing.

Eating and drinking

The breakfasts here are the real deal and will set you up for the day (many a local heads here on weekends). For lunches and dinners, head for any of their recommended local eateries, all an easy stroll away.

Leisure facilities

There is a small spa at the nearby Majestic Village where bookings can be made. The large pool and terrace calls for lazy days.

Service

Personable and laid back - exactly like the venue. This is an owner-run establishment.
