4.1

Central, affordable and brimming with charm.

The Gerlóczy is one of my real favourites: it’s superbly located, it’s as cheap as you’ll find in the city centre, and the rooms have bundles of character. Housed in a late 19th century building, it’s best known as a popular, traditional café overlooking a leafy square. Above the café, however, are 15 classically furnished guestrooms.

Location

Superbly located on a small square at the heart of the downtown, just a minute’s walk from Váci utca.

Bedrooms

I felt like the house guest of a 19th century noble family! From the polished parquet floor to the gold-striped wallpaper, there’s old-fashioned elegance throughout. Rooms have showers or baths, the latter free-standing and with claw feet. You may as well ask if either of the two rooms with balconies is available because they are no more expensive than those without.

Eating and drinking

The rooms sit above the excellent Parisian-style café-restaurant, which is regarded with real fondness by locals. The food and cakes are top drawer, and there’s a lovely al-fresco terrace spilling into the square and shaded beneath the branches of a large tree.

Service

Good, respectful service, with the waiting staff in the uniforms you’d expect of an elegant, old-school café.

Who stays there

Anyone who’s after yesteryear colour and character, and doesn’t need a fitness centre or spa.
