A beautiful hand-made home in the foothills of the Costa Blanca mountains.

The house looks as if it’s been there since Noah signed on as cabin boy on the Ark, but every stone, every beam, and every floor slab was laid by the hands of Thorsten Herrmann with the occasional help of a couple of friends for the bits that were either too big or too heavy to man-handle himself. But the ‘self-build’ went even beyond the mere structural; the window frames, doors and most of the furniture are also the product of the labour of love that Finca Tossal clearly is for Thorsten and his wife, Sonia.

Location

On a hillside in the foothills of the mountains that rise up from Benidorm, but only a half-hour’s drive from the beach. When I sat on the terrace with views way down to the sparkling Mediterranean, I got the feeling that there was no need to rush; the swimming pool isn’t going anywhere, the lovely raised deck for lounging on will be there for plenty of time to come, and it was a bit too early for a siesta on one of the splendid four-poster beds that Thorsten built by hand.

Bedrooms

Moorish arches, walls ragged in rich shades of purple and yellow ochre, brass Moroccan lamps, a double bed with a bed-head made from antique barley-sugar twist pillars (and a mattress I’m tempted to drag back home!), and a high-wide-and-handsome wardrobe built specifically for the proportions of the room. The glorious mix of sumptuous fabrics, elegantly rustic furnishings and warm decoration makes it obvious that Thorsten and Sonia have that elusive ‘taste’ that carries a well-designed home beyond the normal, to somewhere you would love to call your own.

Public areas

A lounge with a bar and deep leather sofas is an excellent place to take an aperitivo, or sit on the lawns and sun terrace and enjoy the view. A large patio by the pool.

Eating and drinking

An excellent and beautifully prepared breakfast, (with a knob of butter curled into a rose to decorate the plates of mixed breads, meats cheeses and cakes) is served in an attractive dining room overlooking the hillsides. A short but tasty dinner menu is offered but you need to book ahead.

Leisure facilities

A swimming pool with lots of wooden loungers, and a big Balinese bed are all that you need to pass away a lazy day. There are bikes to hire and the area is popular with walkers.

Service

Very friendly and eager to make sure everything is just right.

Who stays there

Anyone who wants the option of lazing around a pool without the crowds, but also likes the day on the beach or in the mountains.
