3.2

Cheap and cheerful hostel accommodation in downtown Berlin.

CityStay Hostel occupies a restored department store building that dates from 1896. It's a modern, loft-style space with a terrace and courtyard and - when I was last there at least - friendly, vibrant atmosphere.

Location

CityStay is located in central Berlin (Mitte), but on a quiet pedestrian street. It's close to the S-Bahn, U-Bahn and airport bus stop, and not far from key attractions such as the famed [node:169222] and Unter den Linden boulevard.

Bedrooms

Dorm rooms have between 4-10 beds, and there are also single and double private rooms with or without private bathrooms. Decor is basic, but all rooms are clean and fairly spacious, and dorm beds have individual reading lamps, so you can stay up without disturbing your roommates. Bedding rental costs a one-time, obligatory €2,50 fee.

Public areas

There's a pleasant enough courtyard, though this closes at 10pm in order to keep the noise down.

Eating and drinking

Breakfast is as cheap and cheerful as the rest of the place, but it features healthy touches like organic bread. During summer it's served in the courtyard.

Leisure facilities

There are no in-house leisure facilities but staff do organise pub crawls and other group outings.

Service

Service is friendly and helpful.

Who stays there

Backpackers, single female travellers, couples on a budget.

Breakfast is included in the room rate.
