Only a five-minute walk from Bath Spa railway station and the new bus station, Travelodge Waterside is in a really picturesque location by the Kennet & Avon canal on the site of an old four-star hotel. By road it’s accessed easily and parking is available, on foot it’s only five to 10 minutes along the canal path to the city centre. There’s a sister hotel (Travelodge Central) on George Street in central Bath, which would be more suitable for younger guests coming to Bath for a hen or stag party.
Four of the 125 rooms are accessible ones with plenty of room for wheelchairs and a spacious bathroom with grab rails. Four more are recently decorated family rooms with perky red bathrooms and plenty of space. Doubles are just as roomy with simple decor and spotlessly clean bathrooms; all are clean and functional with flat screen TVs and tea and coffee making facilities. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the rooms are – many of the features, such as sturdy wooden headboards, have been inherited from the building’s time as a luxury hotel.
Reception is next to a smart open-plan lounge area that leads on to the café and bar area, which overlooks the canal.
Eating and drinking
Breakfast, lunches and evening meals are available in the café and prices for dinner dishes range from £5-7 – there’s no need to book, just rock up when you’re hungry. Snack vending machines are in reception for late-night munchies.
Friendly and efficient; the international staff are on hand to get you orientated with a map of Bath and the front desk is a good source of advice.
Who stays there
It’s a mixed bag of business and leisure travellers – Travelodges are popular with families and larger groups, especially more sedate hen and stag parties coming for spa or golf parties.
Travelodges are similar to budget airlines – the further in advance you book, the cheaper the rooms are; so try and get in there early. Breakfast costs £7.50, but is less if booked in advance and on-site parking costs £5 a day, which is cheap by Bath standards.
