The Cleopatra palace is part of the Mare Nostrum resort complex, which occupies a prime location in the redeveloped and upmarket heart of Playa de Las Américas. The hotels are flanked on one side by the lovely El Camisón beach, fronted by the outlandishly kitsch Pirámides de Arona theatre where the Carmen Mota flamenco show is staged, and opposite the Safari Centre shops and restaurants.
The Cleopatra Palace trio of hotels have bedrooms decorated in Roman centurion scarlet and white, with mahogany furniture and a Roman god or goddess in bas-relief over the bed. Ceiling-to-floor picture windows are draped in full length scarlet curtains and lead to balconies overlooking the Roman pool or El Camisón beach; the higher the floor, the better the view. Superior rooms have very large terraces with a private plunge pool.
The Cleopatra Palace, Julio César and Marc Antonio all feature mock Roman, peel-me-a-grape design, with black and white chequered floors, gold reflective columns and marble statues of Roman gods. High ceilings and excellent air conditioning create a very pleasant space the size of a small shopping mall. Lounge furniture abandons the ancient Roman Empire look and opts instead for candy-striped pink and jade in comfortable and stylish rattan seating.
Eating and drinking
There are several a la carte restaurants to choose from. Breakfast is buffet style and is universally acknowledged to be one of the best of any available in the resort. From Continental to full English, you can be as healthy or as indulgent as you please, and you can even start the day with a glass or two of bubbly should the fancy take you and the legs hold you.
The mock Roman bath of the Cleopatra Palace is a much more tranquil affair than the family choice Mediterranean Palace next door. Marble columns and statues of gods and goddesses surround the pool and swimming here feels bizarrely surreal - like I’ve slipped unnoticed on to the set of some soap opera, set in Ancient Rome.
For €15 per person per day you can escape to the adults-only Atlantis Chill Out bar on the fourth floor and play at being a celebrity for the day. Sports and leisure facilities are too comprehensive to list here; suffice to say you’ll never be bored.
One of the resort’s strongest points - the relationship between guests and staff is excellent. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, with an unhurried professionalism that earns a high volume of repeat visitors.
