Star rating:
3 star hotel

4.5

A strong contender for Amsterdam's very best b & b in a private home.

Peter Boogaard, an opera singer by profession, has modernised his 17th-century house with panache. But what makes the b & b really special is his generous hospitality.

Location

Fantastic - on a very quiet street hidden away between the Singel and Herengracht canals, five minutes' walk from the Centraal Station.

Bedrooms

Pug and Jack Russell, the two bedrooms up on the second floor, have prints of dogs relating to their names on cushions, Persian rugs on boarded floors, wrought-iron beds, and smart black-and-white bathrooms. On the floor below lies a two-bedroom apartment of similar standard, with its own spacious sitting room. Ideal for a family or set of friends, it is let out for stays of three nights or more.

Public areas

Pug and Jack Russell share a big, relaxing sitting room, with leather armchairs and a sofa, piles of local literature, and a computer with (free) Internet access.

Eating and drinking

Guests rave about Peter's lavish breakfasts, which might include pancakes or banana fritters, and are sociable affairs, eaten round one table with other guests. The rates also include home-made cakes at teatime, and beer, soft drinks, and tea and coffee round the clock, in the guests' sitting room.

Service

Peter is interesting, chatty, a mine of information on good, local restaurants, and faultlessly helpful - he will even do your laundry for you at no extra charge.
