Royiatiko

Address: Apollonos 27, 1010 Nicosia, Cyprus

Star rating:

4.2

An excellent-value, nearly new hotel in Nicosia’s old town

Opened in 2010, the officially two-star Royiatiko provides a viable alternative to certain, nearby, overpriced multi-starred hotels. Only the lack of a full-service restaurant deprives it of a third star.

Location

Central yet pretty quiet – there’s probably more noise from the pool area than the street. You’re just a few steps away from the medieval Kastelliotissa concert hall, the Leventis Museum and the pedestrianised shopping precincts flanking Ledra Street. The closest independent parking (supposedly free to guests) lies across the street.

Bedrooms

All 32 rooms are the same – rather small – internal size, though many have balconies (the three “superior” ones have 2) and 3 are designed for disabled access. Minimalist decor verges on the boutique, with salt-and-pepper fabric, leather trim on the furniture and light veneer flooring. Individual climate control and flat-screen TVs are standard. Bathrooms are also compact but have all the essentials, including proper stall showers.

Public areas

The black-leather theme is continued, though not overpoweringly, in the lounge and bar areas. Free WiFi throughout, and a “business corner” with PC, printer and photocopier.

Eating and drinking

A varied buffet breakfast is served in the bar; no other meals are given.

Leisure facilities

There’s a basement gym, but without a jacuzzi/sauna, natural light – or air conditioning. In the secluded interior courtyard, the outdoor pool is long, intended for laps rather than paddling, with a seasonal bar; it’s shaded by the building all morning, with only afternoon sun.

Service

Friendly enough, though it’s still early days for a “tradition” to be established.

Who stays there

A variety of international travellers, on either business or leisure trips.

Price advice

Because of its small capacity, the Royiatiko is often full and discounts off rack rates of about 115 euros may not be substantial.
