I got the travel bug when I left school and hitchhiked through Europe, stopping for extended periods in various places along the way: in Gibraltar I got a job as a deck hand on a rusty freighter chugging to and from Tangiers and Lisbon. In Germany I worked as a crane operator and for a while I emulated George Orwell by working as a dishwasher, though in Amsterdam, not Paris. After travelling through Africa I went back to England and, in the late eighties, returned to full-time education. After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in English I moved to Italy, where I lived for thirteen years, working as a teacher and translator and exploring that endlessly fascinating country from north to south. I now live in Cambridge.
