A seven month trip through India and south east Asia in 2008 ignited my current passion for independent travel and travel-writing. I obsessively documented everything that happened on that incredible journey – all of the wonderful experiences, encounters, sights and sounds in each of the countries I visited.
There are now two activities that provide me with real satisfaction and fulfilment – travelling to exciting new places, and writing about these experiences. I try to keep some sort of written record for everywhere I visit – be it somewhere near my current base in London, or a more far-flung, exotic location.
I do harbour some desire to make a living from doing what I love, but I know how tough an industry travel journalism is to successfully infiltrate. I did manage to secure a two week work placement on the travel desk at The Independent towards the end of 2009, and produced two feature articles during that time – (http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/the-big-six-classic-cocktail-bars-1844717.html and http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/the-year-starts-here-with-new-heights-new-horizons-and-even-new-nations-to-explore-take-the-plunge-into-2010-1848669.html) – a very rewarding and valuable experience.
For now, though, I’m happy contributing pieces to Simonseeks, purely for the joy of travel writing, rather than doing it for substantial monetary reward. That’s still the pipedream for the future though…..
