Dubai is laden with things to do and see, but not the usual sort found in most tourism destinations. Being but a few decades old, with much of the place having been built over the past 10 years, there isn't any real historical element to the city. Instead of ancient houses to visit or cobbled stones to trek down, over here it's mainly more modern, steel and glass, structures to explore. And, as you may have already gathered, we do enjoy doing things on a somewhat grand scale, with the world's tallest building and world's tallest fountain heading up an extensive list of table-topping achievements. While there are plenty of art galleries, the lack of several hundred years of history has diminished the 'cultural' aspect of much of the attractions. But that's not to say our sights aren't any less worthy, we just prefer things more awe-inspiring than chin-stroking. Oh, and we've also got a whole lot of sand just a short drive away.

The city isn't huge, but it's not really geared towards getting around on foot. Taxis, thankfully, are inexpensive and plentiful, and getting from one place to another within the city shouldn't take very long at all.

How I’ve picked my things to do:

Dubai has some rather well-known architectural achievements that it would be foolhardy to ignore, so these have featured prominently on my list. I've also tried to include attractions and 'to dos' that are away from the oversized malls and glittering sky-piercing spectacles, but are still well worth a visit. And, of course, I've thrown in the desert for good measure.
