Naples is one enormous sight in itself – a UNESCO World Heritage one, at that – and simply wandering the streets (several of which follow the original Greco-Roman city of Neapolis ('new city) that gave its name to modern-day Naples) and popping into open churches or free galleries could keep you busy for a year, but I've also included those 'don't miss' attractions such as Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as a few lesser known places of interest.

Take a look at the Campania Artecard, which, depending on the type you go for, will offer free entry to the first few and 50 per cent discount to the rest of the most important Neapolitan sights, such as the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and Museo di Capodimonte, as well as the fabulous Royal Palace (Reggia di Caserta) in Caserta. For more details on the card and its benefits, visit www.artecard.it. By clicking on all the sights you plan to visit, the website will calculate how much it would cost with a card and so you can work out which is the best card for your trip.

How I’ve picked my things to do:

I've included the unmissable sights such as the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Vesuvius, nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as a few sights that would involve a day trip but are well worth the effort, such as a trip to Caserta to visit the extraordinary Vanvitelli palace.
