So lovely, the British colonised it first. (Why waste it on the French?)

There are, I reckon, six specific things you need to do to get the measure of Cannes. These will introduce you to the resort’s past as a fishing village and religious centre (difficult to believe these days, but true).

They will lead you through the little town’s development into an epicentre of 19th and 20th-century glamour – and on to the present, when world-class sparkle has by no means obscured proper Provençal roots.

Grandiose

Indeed, it’s the combination of the two which constitutes Cannes’ real attraction. Along the way, you will take in the beauty of the place. (The bay, especially at sunset, is so grandiose that one expects God to appear briefly, booming: “How about that, then?”)

And, because there are only six items on the itinerary, you’ll have ample time to do what you really want to do – which is lounge on bar-terraces with coffee or wine, lounge on the beach (sandy here, unlike in Nice) or, really, just lounge around anywhere. Cannes is very good at that.

How I’ve picked my things to do:

The attractions have been chosen because they’re the ones which permit you best to appreciate Cannes without too much strain on the body, the spirit or the purse.
