Copenhagen is a small capital city but it is packed with historical and cultural interest. Being so compact and so flat, getting around is a breeze - the transport system is first rate and hiring a bike is a great way to explore. Copenhagen has been virtually designed around the bike over the last 30-something years and a third of the city's residents reguarly cycle. It's great fun and very convenient joining them - at least, that is, when the weather's not too cool.

On the conventional sightseeing front there are several excellent galleries and museums, but this harbour city has plenty more to offer - canal cruises and walks around the waterside neighbourhoods are worthwhile. This is a green city with plenty of parks and open spaces - ideal for picnics and lazy summer evenings. Believe it or not but there are also some good beaches in the city and just on its outskirts. You can even swim in the extremely clean harbour at the public (summer only) pools.

If you're visiting in winter, the cold and the darker days do limit your options of course. This is the time of year to snuggle up in the cosy cafés and bars, explore the Christmas market at Tivoli or seek warmth in a spa or public leisure centre.

How I’ve picked my things to do:

My tips aim to provide an overview of the main things to do in terms of culture and activities with a few slightly leftfield options to boot. It's not an exhaustive list but I hope it offers the best of the city.
