Expert review of Ggantija Temples
Two of the oldest sophisticated stone buildings in the world are found here on Gozo.
Two of the oldest of Malta’s remarkable Neolithic temples - built between 3600BC and 2500BC - are found on a plateau overlooking a fertile valley on Gozo. Ggantija (pronounced as in Jiganteeya) gained its name because locals could not believe that anyone other than a giant could have built these temples, constructed as they are from massive lumps of limestone up to 50 tons in weight. I can see their point!
Price advice:
Adults cost 8 euros, over-60s and children aged 12-17 are 6 euros, and children aged 6-11 are 4 euros. Children under-6 are free.
Expert tips:
In front of the temples is a bollard supporting an audio information unit which gives a worthwhile introduction to the temples in a choice of six languages.
Buy some of Charlie’s delicious organic honey and jams from the wall near the ticket office.
