Expert review of Upper Barracca Gardens
Enjoy stunning views and the noon-day salute from Valletta’s highest point.
This arcaded public garden on the top of Valletta’s fortifications offers fabulous views over the Grand Harbour and across to the Three Cities (where the Knights had their first capital in the mid-16th century). It is a pleasant place to stroll or sit with a variety of monuments and statues. At noon each day the cannons on the Saluting Battery just below the gardens (and easily visible from them) are fired to the accompaniment of British martial music (the first time I came here they were playing Rule Brittania!).
Expert tips:
Get there shortly before noon and hear the brief historic commentary followed by the noon-day salute.
If you are very interested in weaponry do the guided tour of the Saluting Battery (+356 21 225 277 / 21 800 992, www.wirtartna.org, for 5 euros) at 11am and hear all about the cannons before staying on the battery for the firing.
