A tranquil beach giving onto pristine water, ideal for families, close to Split.
On the mainland coast, the Makarska Riviera is generally acknowledged by the people in Split to have the best beaches. Of these, Punta Rat, just outside the low-key resort village of Brela, is probably the loveliest – the American magazine Forbes listed it among the Top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. Made up of fine smooth pebbles and backed by fragrant pine trees, offering dappled shade, it’s ideal for families with young children as the seabed slopes gently into calm shallow water. There are sun beds and umbrellas for hire, lifeguards on duty, and bars and restaurants nearby. Behind Brela rise the rocky heights of Mount Biokovo. It lies 45 km southeast of Split and 15 km northwest of Makarska, to which it is connected by a pleasant coastal footpath.
