Modern art gallery on the edge of Split's old town.
Modern art lovers should head here – one of my favorite galleries in Croatia. The permanent exhibition includes icons, old masters, and modern and contemporary paintings and sculpture. Works by notable Croatian artists include portraits of 19th-century European aristocrats by Vlaho Bukovac, hazy Dalmatian seascapes by Emanuel Vidović, and bronze nude sculptures by Ivan Meštrović. You can also see some works by well-known European artists, including Paolo Veneziano and Egon Schiele. The gallery lies just outside Diocletian’s Palace, close to the Golden Gate.

Expert tips:
Avoid the midday summer heat by coming here in the early afternoon - it's wonderfully cool, light and airy.
