Expert review of Pena Palace
Sintra's prettiest palace is dripping with opulence and wonder.
Truly something out of a child's fantasy book, this palace has to be one of Europe's most magical. Outside, there's a sturdy drawbridge and a parade of turrets, domes and ramparts. Inside, beams of gold, brass and silver dance around each room, where chandeliers sway over yawning stone staircases and gilt-framed oil paintings fill the walls.

Entry is six euros, or four euros for under 17s.
