Expert review of Chek Jawa
Chek Jawa is a 100-hectare wetlands on the eastern coast of Pulau Ubin, there are six unique ecosystems in one area – sandy beach, rocky beach, seagrass lagoon, coral rubble, mangroves, and coastal forest. The best way to get to Chek Jawa is to rent a van or bicycle once you alight from the bumboat at Pulau Ubin. If you enjoy walking, Chek Jawa is about a 40-minute walk from the main village.
There’s a 1.1 km boardwalk that runs along the coast and mangrove area as well as 20-metre tall viewing tower offers you a chance to observe the birdlife, including the Collared Kingfisher and Straw-headed Bulbul. You can also book a guided tour or visit the Visitor Centre and viewing jetty for more educational information. Be warned, if you want to book a guided tour, they are largely dependent on the tides and can be booked out months in advance.
Chek Jawa has been slated for land reclamation since 1992, but since then, nature enthusiasts have been vocal in the preservation of this important wetland treasure. And as a consequence, the government has since put their plans on hold, for the time being.
Entry is free, but guided tours cost $60 per group with a maximum of 15 people. Bookings are taken on a half yearly basis.
