Expert review of Es Baluard
Sleek, contemporary art house in the ramparts of a 16th century stronghold.
Whether your passion is for art, or architecture, this modern conversion ticks a lot of boxes. While the works themselves span the gamut of 20th-century greats from Picasso to Kandinsky, it’s the blending of old and new in the building that really makes the place ‘pop’. The new structure of glass, white poured concrete and steel sits well with the stone of the ramparts, and port views have been cleverly framed with cut-outs and geometric lines. Best of all is a walkway that runs around the rim of the roof.
Price advice:
6 euros, free to under 12s.
Expert tips:
The roof terrace often provides the stage for performances and screenings through the summer.
BLD café (also on the roof) offers dishes hailing from all over the world. The 18 euros set lunch is a bit overpriced, but it’s a lovely place for a glass of wine or a morning coffee.
