Expert review of Governors Island
Once home to the U.S. Army and Coast Guard, a growing number of city dwellers have been heading to Governors Island to take in the magnificent views of the city and avoid the hustle and bustle of the city. Since 2003, New Yorkers head here during the dog days of summer for picnics far from the crowds found in other parks in the city. I love heading here in the summer, renting a bike near the dock and riding in and around the island. The views of downtown Manhattan are spectacular and the Statue of Liberty is so close you can almost grab here. Every July, Veuve Cliquot hosts its Polo Classic. The champagne flows freely and it's a not-to-be-missed event if you're lucky enough to score and invite.
The ferry to the island is free and access to most spaces are as well although bike rentals aren't.
