Expert review of Grizedale Forest Park

Escape to the entanted forest.

The 2500-hectare forest site offers a plethora of walking, cycling and wildlife watching. It remains a working forest but is also a gloriously off-the-beaten-track escape from the crowds.

Public areas were remodelled in autumn 2009 and the park now boasts an excellent new visitor centre. Grizedale Mountain Bikes has a shop within the park to tackle the slew of mountain-biking trails.

Grizedale is also home to a major public art installation with a trail of outdoors sculptures throughout the forest. The Carron Crag Trail, a three-miles hike from the Visitor Centre, is the best trail for art fans.

The latest addition is Signs of Adventure, a series of offbeat road signs promoting adventure activities. Pick up a map at the visitor centre and follow the trail on foot or by bike.

Price advice:

The on-site parking costs £4 per day; buy an annual Discovery Pass (£40) for free parking and discounts in the shop.

Expert tips:
Grizedale is a full-day visit, but bring wet weather gear.
The new Cafe in the Forest, run by the same people as Kendal's brewery Arts Centre, is a big improvement on previous facilities for all-day snacks.
