Expert review of Santa Chiara

This Gothic masterpiece has been bombed, but not forgotten.

It's hard to imagine what you might have seen had the church and convent of Santa Chiara not been bombed in 1943 and dramatically restructured before that during the 18th century. Originally built in the 14th century, the Gothic church was built by Robert of Anjou's wife, Sancia, and some of the original friezes and busts can, at least, now be viewed in the museum. The majolica-tiled cloister is also delightful.

Price advice:

Entrance to the church is free. The museum and cloister cost 5 euros; 3.50 euros for concessions.

Expert tips:
Look out for the archaeological evidence of the old Roman city.
Guided tours are also available.
