Expert review of Matadero Madrid

A new avant-garde cultural venue

The Matadero is a vast former slaughterhouse near the Manzanares river that has been converted into a multipurpose arts' centre. There are usually several exhibitions running at any given time. The Naves del Espanol are several spaces of varying sizes that are used for theatrical productions organised by the Teatro Espanol. The venue is also used for fashion shows and all sorts of perfomances.

It is a bit off the beaten track, but is easy to get to by metro - Legazpi station - and is about 20 minutes' walk from the Reina Sofia museum.

Price advice:

Free entrance to all exhibitions.

Expert tips:
Check what's on first, rather than just turning up.
