Expert review of Portobello Road

Explore a cosmopolitan West London neighbourhood with character.

While best known for its long-running antiques market, I think Portbello Road and its surrounding streets are worth visiting for many more reasons. With its neat stucco terraces, well-kept communal gardens and sudden blazes of houses painted up in vivid colours, this neighbourhood has a commendably lived-in elegance. Served by a wealth of small shops, boho pubs and ethnic restaurants, its residents are an assured lot, tolerant, easygoing and cosmopolitan – in many ways, London at its best. The main gateway is Notting Hill Underground station - head north up Pembridge Road, veer left into Portobello Road, then continue as far as Golborne Road. The market is at its busiest on Saturdays.

Expert tips:
Don't take a picnic - Portobello's full of great eateries!
Consider stopping off at the nostalgic Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising (www.museumofbrands.com).
