Expert review of Chelsea Physic Garden

Soothe the soul in a famous botanical garden.

There are three reasons to visit this small riverside walled garden tucked away in the well-heeled streets of Chelsea. Firstly, it is a delightful place to relax in, with beautiful flowers, a good restaurant (reserve in advance) and a small shop selling plants and gifts. Secondly, it has a rich history, having been founded in 1675 by the Society of Apothecaries for the study of medicinal plants. Finally, the enthusiastic staff - including many volunteers - bring the gardens to life with their knowledgeable comments. The the admission price also includes the use of a highly informative audioguide.

Price advice:

£8 adults and senior citizens,  £5 students, unemployed and children (5-15 years old). One adult may bring up to two children only.

Expert tips:
The gardens are small and do get crowded, especially on a sunny day. Go early or late.
Be sure to pick up the monthly 'Points of Interest' leaflet explaining what's currently in bloom.
