Expert review of Famara

Surfers paradise and Lanzarote's most unspoilt beach.

I am no surfer, but love this unspoilt, windswept, brooding beach backed by the high rugged cliffs of Risco de Famara. Tucked away on the north west coast of the island, it has a real get away from it all feel, yet is also a magnet for surfing enthusiasts from around the world. The tiny fishing village and port of Caleta de Famara retains its traditional feel, with a handful of bungalows and bed and breakfasts catering to the steady stream of visitors.

Expert tips:
The strong winds here mean it really isn't a beach for sunbathing.
There are a number of surf schools here if you want to take to the waves.

Famara is one of my favourite places on the island. It was the summer holiday haunt of Cesar Manrique the famous artist. His father owned a holiday cottage here.If you do visit the beach be aware that the undercurrents here are very strong so keep your activities to bathing near the shore and jumping over the bracing Atlantic breakers as they roll in(greatfun!). Don`t leave children unsupervised and make sure you keep an eye on the safety flags
