Expert review of Castillo San Gabriel

Historic castle in the centre of the capital, reached along an atmospheric causeway.

I love the walk along the pedestrian causeway and over the little drawbridge, Puente de las Boles (there is another one for vehicles) to reach this hulking castle sitting out to sea. Built in the last years of the 19th-century to protect the island from pirate attacks, the Castillo San Gabriel is located in a key position almost in the centre of Lanzarote's capital. Imposing cannons stand sentinel at the entrance – walk inside to see the cramped castle quarters which house a small archaeological museum.

Expert tips:
Don't confuse this with Arrecife's other castle – Castillo San Jose.
Despite the advertised times, opening times can be erratic.
