Best for Culture - Expert review of Casa-Museo del Campesino

Fascinating museum offering an insight into rural life.

I often recommend this low-key site because it offers a tender insight into local island life. Lanzarote architect and artist, César Manrique, created the House-Museum of the Rural Farmworker in honour of the hardworking peasants who toiled the land. It is a replica of a traditional farm building and courtyard, complete with authentic kitchen and workshops. One of Manrique's distinctive sculptures – El Monumento Fecundidad al Campesino Lanzaroteño (The Fertility Monument to the Lanzarote Peasant) – stands 15 metres high at the side of the road like a giant white cubist totempole.

Expert tips:
Have lunch at the lovely tapas bar.
