Best for Watersports - Expert review of Derwentwater and Platty+
Idling by the gentle lake waters.
Derwentwater is the third largest of the Cumbrian Lakes. For families, it's the perfect spot for some stone skimming and lakeside walks – my favourite views are from Friar’s Crag.
The polymath John Ruskin was moved to declare this to be one of the top views in Europe and the land is now owned by the National Trust.
For something more active, Patty+ is a watersports centre by the Lodore stage on teh banks of Derwentwater. It offers courses, plus dinghy and canoe hire.
Price advice:
Kayak hire from Platty+ starts at £6.50 per hour.
Expert tips:
Derwentwater is especially rich in wildlife – look out for greylag geese and the locally scarce yellow wagtail.
Tuition prices at Platty+ are more economical for larger groups – £27 per hour for one person but £18 for four.
