Best for Fun - Expert review of Catbells: your first Lakes walk

If you climb just one peak, then make it Catbells.

Alfred Wainwright, the authority on walking in the Lakes, wrote: "Catbells is one of the great favourites, a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together."

The relatively gentle peak of Catbells makes it a hugely popular trail for first-time walkers and families keen to stretch their legs.

Its well marked easy to access with the trailhead just beyond the Keswick Pier to Hawse End. The ascent to the summit at 1481ft is manageable – but not without moments to test you.

Route information form the tourist information centre in Maket Square.

Price advice:

All that fresh air – and it's free.

Expert tips:
If the steep lower slopes are daunting, head left to the Woodford's Path, a series of zigzags, which offer a gentler ascent.
Coming down, the descent is set at an easy gradient, making for a gentle stroll down.
