Best for Escapists - Expert review of Sakıp Sabancı Museum

Classy art and artefacts museum with gorgeous setting and stunning views.

With such a beautiful setting – an early 20th century villa set amid lush grounds overlooking the Bosphorus – it’s easy to be distracted from the museum itself, but the rotating exhibits, often focused on art and artefacts from the Islamic world, are always interesting and well-presented. There’s also a permanent collection of early Turkish paintings, Ottoman calligraphy, and 18th and 19th century furniture, as well as an outpost of Changa, one of the best restaurants in the city.

Price advice:

Regular admission is 10 lira; good discounts for students and seniors.

Expert tips:
The museum organises art workshops and other activities for kids. Check the “education” section of its website for more details.
Students from the affiliated Sabancı University give free guided tours of the grounds and the permanent collection on Saturdays and Sundays at 3.30pm.
