Expert review of Istanbul Modern
Cool contemporary art venue with a great location and café.
Istanbul’s contemporary art museum, located in a stylishly renovated old warehouse, offers an interesting, if not terribly exciting, permanent collection of Turkish painting on the top floor, and generally more compelling temporary exhibits on a wide range from themes in the lower galleries. The attached Istanbul Modern Café overlooking the water has excellent food and great views, while the museum shop is a good place to pick up interesting design-focused souvenirs.
Price advice:
Regular admission is 12 Turkish Liras; students and seniors are half-price. Everyone gets in for free on Thursdays.
Expert tips:
Check to see what’s playing in the downstairs movie theatre, which offers an interesting monthly film program.
Pop across the car park afterwards to see what’s on at Sanat Limanı (Art Port), a new art space showcasing modern and experimental works in a vast converted warehouse.
