Best for Escapists - Expert review of Ullswater Steamers

Cruising the 'Dark Lake' for a taste of history.

Steamer services have been criss crossing Ullswater since 1859 and five classic steamers, some heritage boats, offer a gentle cruise with pnaoramic views - weather depending.

Boat services call at Pooley Bridge, Howtown and Glenridding and connect with bus services from Penrith. Hop on and off for superb walks and a taste of nature away from the crowds in this lesser-known and delightfully tranquil part of the Lakes.

The views of England's third highest mountain, Helvellyn, are amongst the best you will find.

Price advice:

For day cruising, the Round the Lake Pass offers best value at £12.70 as it is valid all day.

Expert tips:
Walkers: pick up a Walker's Value Ticket, valid for three stages around the lake, for £11.
Keep your eyes peeled for Red Squirrels and Red Breasted Merganser - the route is rich in wildlife.
Treat yourself to a sundowner - the vessels have licenced bars.
