Best for Chilling out - Expert review of Royal Botanic Gardens

The West End’s premier picnic spot, these gardens are adored by botanists and students.

I used to spend too many carefree afternoons relaxing in this West End park. Perfect for sunny afternoon strolls with an ice-cream, this park showcases a variety of floral, horticultural and botanical themed greenhouses and is a great place for families with young children to play in. For green fingered experts, there is a variety of exotic trees and plants – including a 200 year old weeping ash, a fantastic selection of orchids, an uncommon vegetable garden, and a world rose garden. A sanctuary from the bustle of the city centre and West End, the gardens centrepiece is the Kibble Palace, a 19th century wrought iron framed glasshouse.

Expert tips:
Ideal on a warm summer’s day. Come winter, the nearby Oran Mor pub may be a better choice.
There is an under 12’s play area and a children's garden for stressed out mums and dads.
A number of events happen year round in the gardens, including art classes for kids.
