Best for Fun - Expert review of Glengoyne Distillery
I love this place: not only is it a beautiful glimpse of the Highlands, but the distillery reeks of history as much as high spirits. Legend has it that Rob Roy, he of the windswept ginger hair and beard but minus the Liam Neeson Irish brogue, used to hide out in the Dumgoyne hills behind the distillery. A crystal clear waterfall, some of it known to have filtered through the rocks of Dumgoyne for 40 years, flows almost straight into the distillery to complete the picture postcard set-up.
A 20 minute drive or 40 minute bus ride from the West End, the 10 mile trip to Glengoyne is half the fun: the road winds through some stunning southern Highland hills and forests.
Hourly tours run from the reception centre and take visitors through every stage of the whisky making process, including a rare visit to the mash-house. And – of course – any visit would be incomplete without a dram of whisky. A rare vintage indeed.
A fine vintage of tours are on offer, priced accordingly to how much whisky you may want to drink. The Master Blender tour lets you create you very own special brand.
Glengoyne Tour £6.50 per person. Wee Tasting Tour £8.50 per person. Tasting Tour £15 per person. Master Blender Session £30 per person. Cask Idol £70 per person. The Masterclass £100 per person. A Century of Whisky £150 per person.
