Expert review of Santuari de Sant Salvador

Monastery perched at the highest point of the Sierra de Llevant, with outstanding views.

The brave walk or cycle up to this lonely monastic outpost. Lazier types – like myself – drive, then bask in the glory of the view once they get to the top. Either way it’s a highly rewarding experience, sitting up here feeling on top of the world, gazing on the face of Christ, arms stretched out over Majorca. You can take a prowl around the monastery, its museum and gardens, and there’s a well-marked footpath that takes you around the back of a ruined 14th century castle.

Expert tips:
Stop here for a basic lunch of pa amb oli topped with slivers of local ham or cheese, and a glass of monastery made wine.
You can also spend the night in the monastery’s smartly renovated chambers: 971 827 282.
