Best for Escapists - Expert review of Water of Leith
The Water of Leith is12 miles long and the walkway allows you to meander through the city. The walkway dips in and out from the busy roads and pavements of Edinburgh to the tranquil water. There are gates, steps and secret entrances along its length and, with the right map, one minute you will find yourself in the busy West End of Princes Street, the next in a leafy green wilderness with herons, ducks, fish and miles of water ahead.
It takes you through and past Colinton Village and Dell, the Union Canal, Saughton Winter Gardens, Murrayfield Stadium, the Gallery of Modern Art, Dean Village, Stockbridge, the Royal Botanic Gardens and Leith. You can use it to walk from A to B. Well over 80 species of birds have been spotted here, so it really is an oasis.
It is a magical, hidden part of Edinburgh and once you discover it you will enjoy sharing the secret with other incredulous travellers. Download a map here http://bit.ly/cZ2YtR.
