Expert review of Kilmainham Gaol
This is the best 1.5 hours you'll ever spend if you're interested in Ireland's history. I've visited here many times since I was a schoolchild and I learn something new each time - the building is very special indeed. The leaders of the 1916 Rising were executed at Kilmainham Jail and the tour looks at the history of Irish Republicanism. It's one of the largest disused prisons in Europe, offering a tragic snapshot of Ireland's emergence as a modern nation from 1780s to the 1920s. Attractions include a major exhibition detailing the political and penal history of the prison and its restoration. The tour of the prison includes an audio-visual show and visitors with special needs can be accommodated if you call ahead. The prison was closed in 1924 so it really is modern history.
Adult tickets are 6euros, senior/group tickets 4euros, child/student only 2euros or a family ticket at 14euros is fantastic value. Tours last 60 minutes.
